The fabrics of the Strangers of Norwich have been an inspiration to me for many years. I love the bright colours and combinations of stripes and patterns; the texture of the cloths; the age and hidden stories that lay beneath the hand woven.
The designs that I have created are based on cloths that were woven in the 1790’s, and preserved in pattern books that were used by merchants and manufacture’s to sell and record their wares. These books are fragile and beautiful, and capture the skill and imagination of a generation of Norwich weavers. The fabrics were traded and sought after all over the world, but little now remains.
Digital technology has enabled me to reinvent these designs so they can be seen and enjoyed again for the first time in nearly 200 years.
